“As far as light excelleth darkness.”
— Ecclesiastes 2:13 (KJV)
Description:
Before the Flame reflects on the relationship between wisdom and foolishness, light and darkness, and the ability to recognize what truly matters.
The passage from Ecclesiastes 2:13, “As far as light excelleth darkness,” is incorporated directly into the painting in tactile Braille, inviting viewers to experience the words beyond sight.
Wisdom is a kind of light that allows us to see beyond appearances, to recognize what is meaningful amid the trivial, and to discover what truly matters, even when it cannot be seen with our eyes.
The title suggests a moment before illumination, when understanding begins to emerge. Through the relationship between image, touch, and Scripture, the painting invites reflection on the quiet power of discernment and the light that wisdom brings to our lives.
