A Language Between Us portrays two girls using their hands to cast bird-shaped shadows onto a wall. Their simple gesture becomes a shared language—one formed through movement, imagination, and the quiet understanding that can exist between two people without the need for words.

Inspired by Denise Irene Marsh’s poem Synchronization, the painting reflects on those rare connections that feel instinctive and effortless. The two figures, their hands, and the shadows they create suggest a space where individual perspectives meet and briefly become one.

The image of the birds adds another layer of meaning: what begins as a shadow becomes a symbol of freedom, transformation, and imagination. The title, A Language Between Us, speaks to all the ways we communicate beyond conventional language—through a gesture, a gaze, touch, memory, or simply being present with another person.

Three-dimensional Braille is integrated directly into the pictorial composition, extending this idea of communication beyond the visual. Designed to be experienced through both sight and touch, the tactile text creates another pathway into the work and reinforces the painting’s meditation on connection.
